Reading comprehension: Text: pollution

I.  Text : Pollution of environment

We live in a swiftly changing world. Industrial and water engineering projects cutting of forests, ploughing up of virgin lands, the use of chemicals – all this is changing the face of the earth, our “habitat”.

Scientific study of all the interrelationships in nature and the consequences of interference clearly lay behind the changes. Large amounts of harmful wastes of industry and transport are being released into the air and water, including cancer-causing substances.

Carbon dioxide from the burning of coal is covering the heat-reflecting qualities of the atmosphere. Sooner or later, this will reach a dangerous point. But we do not know when.

Poisonous chemicals used in agriculture are penetrating the body of man and animal and are causing serious damage to the brain, the nervous system, the blood, the liver and other organs…

The use of antibiotics in poultry-raising has led to the development of new disease causing microbes that are resistant to antibiotics.

The dumping of radioactive wastes leads to the erosion and salinization of soils; birds and other useful wildlife like toads and frogs are destroyed because of local, temporary, bureaucratic and egoistic interests.

The salvation of our environment requires that we overcome our divisions and our temporary and local interests. If not, the developed countries will poison each other with their wastes; and above all, they will poison the developing countries.

2- Determine the dangerous impacts of poisonous chemicals on people?

3- What makes some microbes to be resistant to antibiotics?

Correction of the activity

1- According to the text, the principal cause is the release of large amounts of harmful wastes of industry and transport including cancer-causing substances into the air and water.

2- It causes serious damage to the brain, the nervous system, the blood, the liver and other organs.

3- These microbes are resistant to antibiotics because they are caused by new diseases due to the use of antibiotics in poultry-raising.
